Searching for the Devil
Calm down. Take a deep breath. I am not suddenly turning into a modern-day Devil worshiper. I'm just looking for a product from my childhood that just doesn't seem to exist in San Antonio stores. The product is Underwood Liverwurst Spread.
When I was a kid, we traveled a lot. We were either going to visit my grandparents or moving to a new Air Force base. We traveled in a no frills kind of way. We drove from dusk to dawn, stopping only to get gas when needed. Overnight stops were at the cheapest mom and pop motel my dad could find with a vacancy. All traveling food came out of the ice chest, which Daddy called the cooler, and a cardboard box Mom kept at her feet. Eventually, there was also a large rectangular Tupperware container full of cleaned and cut celery, carrots, cucumbers, and tomatoes.
Lunches were my favorite. We would stop at a picnic area. Daddy would hand things to my sister and me to lug to the picnic table while Mom got it cleaned and ready. Then, we would all sit down and enjoy a very quick sandwich feast made from cans of sardines, Swanson Chicken Spread, Underwood Deviled Ham Spread, Underwood Roast Beef Spread, or my favorite- Underwood Liverwurst Spread. I thought those lunches were the epitome of fine dining. Especially if we were lucky enough to have Ritz crackers and a can of Kraft Easy Cheese to go with our sandwiches.
Swanson Chicken Spread is no longer on the market. That is pretty sad. It was so nicely seasoned, and it made awesome sandwiches. It was so much better than Underwood Chicken Spread, which Mom only bought when she couldn't get Swanson. You can still buy the Underwood brand. In fact, all of the original flavors are still available- just not in San Antonio. I have seen the ham, corned beef, chicken, and roast beef varieties here.
I searched the web looking for the liverwurst spread. I learned that I can buy a six pack on Amazon for about $25, or a case of 24 for about $50. I love the stuff, but don't need to stock my shelves with it. I just want one or two cans for a fair price to savor as a memorable comfort food.
So let's come to the chase. I need you. I need you to either find me a place that sells Underwood Liverwurst Spread in the San Antonio area, or to go in on a case of it with me. That's right. If twelve of us go in on a case, we can each have two cans for about $2.00 a can. I have Prime to cover the shipping, AND I will eat the cost of the tax. Anyone? Anyone?
